One Lovely Blog Award & A Giveaway!

I CAN’T BELIEVE IT! Malanie at Malanie Loves Fiction nominated me for the One Lovely Blog Award, and I’m seriously blushing guys! I’m seriously feeling the love! Coming from a blogger whose posts always make me giggle or want to read something, I am blown away! Thank you so much Malanie, I truly appreciate it!!

  1. Thank the person who nominated you for the award
  2. Display the banner/sticker/logo on your blog
  3. Share 7 facts or things about yourself
  4. Nominate up to 15 bloggers that you admire and inform the nominees

So, funny thing about the timing of this nomination- the day before I was nominated, I was challenged by my wonderful bookish friend Megan at What Megan Reads to join in on the Get To Know The Bookstagrammer tag. So, I put together some photos with some fun facts- so I’ll share them here!

My Seven Fun Facts!

  1. I love horses! As if you didn’t know already, haha. I don’t own my own horse (they’re expensive fur-children), but I’ve worked with and ridden them since I was fourteen.
  2. I love going to live concerts- the louder, the better! Since I’ve moved to Kentucky, I try to make it to at least one concert a year because where I grew up, you had to drive a minimum of 2 hours away to see anyone of note perform. Here, I can get to three different venues in less than one hour!
  3. I enjoy hunting. I come from a long line of hunters, and I passed my hunter’s safety course when I was ten, and got my first deer when I was eleven. I love spending time in the woods with my father, grandfather, uncles, and siblings, and I really love being able to fill my freezer! Also, for anyone who is anti-hunting, I respect your position, but I don’t want any debates here. This is just me sharing a bit of myself.
  4. I’m a total cat lady. I have two of my own, Junior and Millie, and I grew up with three cats- Hootie, Hazel, and Penny.
  5. I love to travel! I have only left the USA once (Oh, Canadaaa), but I love roadtrips and exploring new places. I’ve been to 24 states so far, and want to see the other 26! Also, my wanderlust dream is to venture off to Europe someday.
  6. I hate cooking. I want to be one of those Rachel Ray- types, but even when I’m really trying, I still manage to overcook (ahem, burn to a crisp) or under cook everything. Therefore, my microwave is the most important cooking appliance I own. My sister got the chef genes in our family.
  7. I am an auntie many times over. My brother and his wife gave me a nephew and two nieces, and my other-brother and his significant-other just recently gave me another niece! I live close to my brother and his family, and it has been a joy to see those kiddos grow up and learn new things, and the laughter is endless with them! Oh, also, I’m an auntie to many of my friend’s fur-children!

I nominate the following lovely bloggers…

…for their strong, independent writing. You all write about the things you are passionate about, and even though I don’t know you, as a reader of your blogs, I can glimpse your personalities and interests based on your writing styles. I follow you all because I either share similar interests or feelings about the topics you discussed, and I find that ability to connect to your readers lovely. Thank you and congratulations to you all!

BUT WAIT, there’s more!

I also want to take the time to announce that I’ve gotten 200 followers on WordPress, 300 on Twitter, and 500 on Instagram! I am so thankful for everyone who has taken the time to check out my blog and socials, and I wanted to do something to show my appreciation! So I’m doing another giveaway!! This time, the prize is a gorgeous copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, a cute palm-sized notebook, and a bookmark!

Here are the entry rules:

  1. United States entries only. (Sorry all my international followers, it’s not you, it’s me. I’m still trying to figure out the international shipping system)
  2. Real accounts only- no spammers!
  3. Follow my blog, and comment below that you’ve followed (or are already following!)
  4. For a bonus entry- follow @thelexbookie on Twitter!

THANK YOU ALL for entering and following me! I’m already working on my goals for next year, and I’ve got more giveaways in the future- so stick around and enjoy some more bookish fun!

And, while we’re all here, how about a book tag? The Newbie Book Tag!

So I know I’m not technically “new”, but I still feel like a Newbie and y’all don’t get a whole lot of personal info from me. So when I saw this via Books, Netflix and Tea, I thought that it was a great tag and good way for you guys to get to know a little more about me and why I started “The Lexington Bookie”!

  1. Why did you start this blog?

Initially, it was a new years resolution to read more and maintain a blog (because I’ve started about half a dozen poorly done blogs, and then gave up on them). After about a year of growth, I started enjoying the process, and noticed that y’all were reading my stuff and enjoying it too! So from there, I wanted to put more effort into what I was doing, and really have fun with it for both myself and my audience! Oh, also, it’s a great way to remember everything I’ve read- after a while, it all sort of blurs together.

  1. What are some fun and unique things you can bring to blogging?

(Miss America answer here…) Seriously, you all are my inspiration- all you bloggers out there who are reading and reviewing, and writing about your lives and experiences… so I take a lot of cues from you. But I try really hard to put my truth and honesty into everything I write- I think everyone does- and that’s about as unique as I can get. For the fun- haha these tags give me such a kick every time!

  1. What are you most excited about for this new blog?

I like getting to discuss reads with new people, and actually, through this blog I found a local book club which I’m very excited about joining! So definitely sharing my love of books with other book lovers!

  1. Why do you love reading?

I’ve got about a million reasons, so I’ll narrow it down to my top five. One: The escape, the ability of the mind to fall into a story and be carried away while the body is still relaxing in bed/on the couch/etc. Two: The travel. I’ve only left the US briefly when I went to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, but because of reading, I’ve been to all the continents, dozens of countries, many futuristic worlds, and many of them several times. Three: The characters become new friends, or mentors, or idols, or representatives of people whose values differ (and therefore help define) mine. Four: the plot twists! It’s a great reminder that just when you think you have things figured out, you may actually have no clue. Five: the wisdom. I learn so much from books, and they have truly helped shape the person that I am, the person I am proud to be. I have lived many lives, have seen so many things, in the short amount of time that I’ve been on this earth and reading.

  1. What book or series got you into reading?

I’ve always had my nose in a book for as long as I can remember, but lordy it’s hard to recall what those books were. I can tell you I read all the Junie B. Jones books, and most of the Ramona books, and all the American Girls and Dear America books. Those definitely kept me turning pages. And then, when Harry Potter came along…. I mean you don’t quit after you find magic like that!

  1. What questions would you ask your favorite author?

I have a few favorite authors, so I would like them all to answer this: How do you develop all these characters, and how real are they to you? How far do you imagine their existence?

  1. What challenges do you think will be the hardest to overcome?

I struggle with balancing time between reading, writing, and being active on social media with time for socializing, working, and having time for other self care. I love being busy, but I’m also really great at burning myself out, so although I’ve been trying to stay balanced, it’s a constant challenge.

  1. When did you start reading?

I know I could read in Kindergarten, like small things, so I guess I was around 5 or so. I was one of three kids, so my parents always read us bedtime stories, but I don’t recall trying to read on my own. The first memory I have of really reading for my own enjoyment was first grade. My two best friends at the time were really good readers, and I was always trying to keep up with them on the reading chart that my teacher kept. I wanted as many stickers (completed books) as they had. And by the time I made it through the grade, I was a regular at the library. By the time I was in fourth grade, my librarian (Hey Mrs. Lyman!) taught me how to check out my own books, haha!

  1. Where do you read?

Everywhere. In bed, on the couch, in my hammock, at work, at lunch, on breaks, in the waiting room at appointments… haha everywhere. I always have a book or two with me at all times. It’s why my purse is so big- it has to fit books too!

  1. What kind of books do you like to read?

My favorite is historical fiction, but I read a little bit of everything! I like changing things up so I never get bored.

Hi Everyone!

So I’m relatively new to the blogging game, and this is my first blog that I’ve been disciplined enough to maintain. I’m really enjoying it, and it’s really heightened my reading experience now that I’m looking for good things to note in the next blog post. But as far as gaining an audience, I’m feeling pretty stuck.

I need some help. I’ve been sharing my blog on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, but I’m not getting many followers that way. And I’m not being follower-hungry, but I would like more interaction with my posts- you know, recommendations, discussions, that kind of thing. I have a few ideas about what I could try, but I was wondering what you all suggest?

Here are some of the things I’ve thought of trying:

  • Instagram- new account specifically for book covers with link to blog
  • Twitter- (I don’t do Twitter very well but) new account, tweet when new blog post available
  • Upgrading WordPress to a Personal or Premium plan

What do you think?
